Helmets
Revisited
Q:
Is it law in California that riding helmets (for
horseback riding) must be worn for riders ages 18 and
under?
A:
California does not mandate the use of helmets for
anyone engaging in horse related activities.
However, parents should be aware that Section 21212 of
the California Motor Vehicle Code requires persons under
18 to wear helmets during the following activities in
public areas such as parks, roadways and bike paths:
skateboarding, skating (in-line or regular roller
skates), riding a scooter or riding a bicycle. In
addition, the California Motor Vehicle Code requires
persons of all ages operating motorcycles, motorized
bicycles or motorized scooters on public roadways to
wear helmets. Many private boarding stables and public
riding areas also require riders to wear helmets.
