Political Action Items
  Affecting the Equine Community

The purpose of this section is to direct attention to political action items affecting the horse community on the local, state and national level, with a special emphasis on trails access, zoning issues, and preservation of the rights of equestrians and ranch property owners. Do you know of a political issue affecting horsemen in your city or county? Is there a letter writing campaign, public meeting, bill or election that needs our participation? Please write to info@bayequest.com and let us know.

nabull3.gif (131 bytes)  Help preserve Bear Creek Stables (posted 5/6/05)

Near Los Gatos in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Bear Creek Stables is a family run 72 horse stable that has been there for over 100 years. MidPeninsula Open Space District is currently conducting public planning workshops for Bear Creek Redwoods, which includes the stables and several miles of horse trails.

Midpen has not mentioned the ranch as an asset in its description of the Bear Creek Redwoods parcel. In fact, there is no mention of the ranch anywhere in their literature. When the stable's fate was brought up at the public meeting, MidPen was vague and mentioned only that they are considering equestrian use, which does not necessarily mean that they want the ranch to stay. In fact, they have already closed at least one other ranch on their other properties.

Please send an email to masterplan@openspace.org and let them know that you want the stables and horse trails to be included in the master plan. You can also go to their web site www.openspace.org

If you want to be included on our Friends of Bear Creek Stables mailing list, please send your email address to: Friendsofbcstables@sbcglobal.net

Please put 'Add me to your list' in the subject line. (We will not share your email address with other organizations.)
